In my opinion, learning starts with the proper attitude.
A curiosity, an interest, a burning question, a desire to know...
I encourage everyone to find what interests you and to pursue it.
What do I believe regarding learning?
Students learn by doing.
Successful practice builds confidence
Confidence leads to greater freedom and less stress.
You need to quickly find help when you are unsure what to do…(Friend, Textbook, Office Hours, Learning Center)
You must have a desire from within to learn.
Talking aloud to yourself (your thought process)
might be seen as weird, but is scientifically proven method to improve memory.
Explaining your work (as you are doing it) with your classmates deepens understanding.
You must build-up to doing the math on your own.
(no notes, no books, no help).
Learning takes time, patience and persistence.
Successful Strategies
Schedule Time During the Day for Homework/Review.(Best if right after class)
Identify Someone to Ask for Help (fellow student).
Ask Questionsin Class. (Don’t let me get away with confusing you!
Sit Where You Will Not Be Distracted. (The front row is the best spot!)
The Moment that Trouble Hits, See Your Instructor (you are not the only one, be not afraid – I want to know when you are having difficulty)
There is No Substitute for a Well-Rested, Fresh Mind and Body.
Allow Yourself to Be Open, Inquisitive, and Completely Focused. (Don’t be afraid to be intense when it comes to being in class. This is serious stuff. )
